Cobalt contributes corrosion resistant and hardness if alloyed with other metals and when used in electroplating. The major uses of cobalt is preparing metal alloys. Cobalt-60 with a half-life of 5.3 years is a gamma ray source when used in radiotherapy and sterilization. It is used as a catalyst in the petroleum production and chemical synthesis. Cobalt molybdate catalyst is active in desulfurization of petroleum. Cobalt is combined with many other elements including chlorine, sulfur, nitrogen and oxygen. In addition to a common state +1, the most prevalent oxidation states of cobalt are +2 and +3. Cobalt compounds are used as pigments in glass and ceramics. It is used as a drying agent for paints, varnishes and inks and animal feeds. It is a raw material to make other cobalt salts.

Cobalt oxide are oxides of Cobalt and are Inorganic Compounds. There are three oxides of cobalt.
They are as below,
1) Cobalt (II) oxide known as Cobaltous Oxide or Cobalt monoxide.
2) Cobalt (III) oxide known as Cobaltic oxide or Di cobalt trioxide.
3) Cobalt (II, III) oxide known as Cobaltosic oxide, Tri Cobalt tetroxide, Cobalto-cobaltic oxide.
Cobalt (II) oxide CAS number [1307-96-6] has Molecular formula CoO, Mol. Wt.: 74.9326 gm. /mole. It is a blackish or grayish powder finds its application mainly in ceramic industries and also in chemical industries for preparing Cobalt (II) salts such as Cobalt (II) nitrate having Mol. Formula Co( NO3 )2.
Cobalt (III) oxide CAS number [1308-04-9] has Molecular formula Co2 O3, Mol. Wt.: 165.86 gm. / mole. It is a black colored powder.
Cobalt (II, III) oxide CAS number [1308-06-1] has Molecular formula Co3 O4, Molecular Wt.: 240.8 gm. /mole. It is available in black colored powder form, soluble in hot acids and alkali hydroxides. Cobalt (II, III) oxide is used mainly as a pigment in glass industries.
Cobalt oxide is an olive-green to red crystals, or grayish or black powder in appearance, cobalt oxide is used extensively in the ceramics industry as an additive to create blue colored glazes and names as well as in the chemical industry for producing cobalt (II) salts.
Cobalt oxide is a metallic pigment that provides blue coloring in porcelains and glass. Various forms of cobalt oxide are changes to CoO at 850 – 900 C. CoO is a grayish brown powder that decomposes at 1935 C, insoluble in water. It is also used as a drying agent in inks and varnishes and as a feed and fertilizer additive.

Cobalt (II) carbonate is the inorganic compound with the formula CoCO3. This reddish paramagnetic solid is an intermediate in the hydrometallurgical purification of cobalt from its ores. It is an inorganic pigment, and a precursor to catalysts.
Cobalt carbonate, also known as spherocobaltite, is a mineral with chemical formula CoCO3. It is the carbonate salt of cobalt. It forms red trigonal crystals with specific gravity 4.13 which decompose on melting. Cobalt carbonate is insoluble in either cold or hot water but soluble in acids.
Cobalt carbonate is used in pottery glazes and may be found in pottery supply stores. Cobalt carbonate has same coloring application as it decomposes to cobalt oxide at high temperature. Cobalt carbonate tends to disperse better in a glaze but can produce blisters because of the CO2 gas presence at high temperature. Commercial grades of cobalt carbonate are the complex of carbonate and hydroxide such as cobalt carbonate hydroxide (1:1) (CAS RN: 12069-68-0), Cobalt carbonate hydroxide (2:3) (CAS RN: 12602-23-2), and cobalt carbonate hydroxide (2:3) monohydrate (CAS RN: 51839-24-8).
